Hunting for an aviation job is a tough and lonely business. You’re out there on your own, for the most part, and it’s hard to know when you’re messing it up. When we’re working, we get feedback from a supervisor or the boss them when our work is less than stellar. When you are job hunting all you know is that you are not getting interviews or offers. Internally, you know that might be an indicator of something, but you are just not sure what.
My intention with this article series is to outline the most common mistakes I see Aviation Job Seekers make and the issues that most commonly plague them.
If I were to pick out an almost universal mistake, it is the failure to have plan. My father-in-laws favorite quote “fail to plan, plan to fail”. A lack of an Aviation Job Search Strategy is like attempting a mulit-leg cross country trip without a GPS The idea of simply jumping in a car and heading down the highway doesn’t occur to most people, yet some seem to do that with an Aviation Job Search. I can identify a few reasons why I think this might be:
1. Some assume because they have all the training and quals that a job will come to them. 2. Most people assume the most planning should go into a resume and that’s all they need. 3. A Job Search Strategy is something most people don’t think of or aren’t even aware of.
What is a Aviation Job Search Strategy?
Strategy refers to a plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal.
Summarized
- A comprehensive plan to accomplish the goal of being hired - Integrates and determines the person’s actions in advance - Unique per individual planning - Ensures that advanced thought and comprehensive decision making are done
Why have a Job Search Strategy?
Putting together a Aviation Job Search Strategy is not complicated or difficult. It does require some “planning” time, but well it in order to ensure you are checking all your boxes. Your job search is more than updating and distributing your resume online.
I love my father-in-law but my advice to land your aviation job is “ “You always need a plan. A plan can change, but you always need a plan.”
