US airlines employ 1.7 percent fewer employees than in 2009
August marked the 26th consecutive month in which full time employment numbers have decreased in the airline industry in the US as compared to the same month of the previous year. This is according to a report by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
The 1.7% decrease in employment from 2009 to 2010 was represented by a drop of 6,469 jobs, bringing August 2010 numbers down to 337,835.
While there were overall losses in airline industry employment, there were carries that have increased employment in the last year also. Delta airlines, as well as several discount and regional airlines reported an increase in employment.
Currently 67.8% of employees in the airline industry work for major network passenger airlines. 16.9% are employed by low-cost or discount airlines, and 13.8% are employed by regional carriers.
Employment within the low-cost or discount airlines was up by 2.0% in August. Virgin America, Frontier, Spirit, Allegiant Air, JetBlue, and Southwest all posted increases in full time employment numbers. AirTran is the only airline in the low-cost category that reported a loss.
